Reunion banana farmer races to stop fungal plague threatening his livelihood

A fungal disease spreading across nearby islands now threatens Reunion's banana supply and farmers' survival.

Gilbert Bafinal grows bananas in Ravine des Cabris on Reunion, and 90 percent of his income depends on the crop surviving a threat he cannot see coming. Tropical Race 4, a fungal disease already tearing through plantations in Mayotte, Comoros, and Madagascar, has not yet reached Reunion's soil. Bafinal intends to keep it that way, though he knows the margin for error is thin. The stakes are sharpest for farmers whose fields are planted almost entirely with Grande Naine bananas, a variety with little natural resistance to TR4. Uprooting plants, switching to resistant strains, replanting, and then waiting years for production to recover would push many growers toward financial ruin. Bafinal carries an additional worry: that resistant varieties might not satisfy customers who have grown up eating the taste they know. Reunion has lived through banana shortages before. After cyclones, prices have climbed to 8 or 10 euros per kilogram and stayed there for months. TR4 would be categorically different. Some parcels could become permanently unsuitable for current varieties. The island would lean more heavily on imports, with transportation costs absorbed by consumers, and bananas would shift from a daily staple to something closer to a luxury. Eric Lucas, diversity officer at Reunion's Chamber of Agriculture, does not soften the warning. "We have had suspicions and alerts, but no confirmed cases," he said. "The disease is very present in Mayotte, Comoros, and Madagascar. It is alarming because people travel frequently and can bring the disease back." His message to travelers is direct: "The danger is too great to risk bringing back a cutting or plant." By contrast, the fungus itself moves without urgency. Dr. Isabelle Robène, a researcher at Cirad, describes how TR4 penetrates banana root systems and works its way through the plant's vascular vessels. Leaves yellow. The plant deteriorates and dies. Once established, the pathogen is nearly impossible to eliminate. Spores survive indefinitely in soil, and no chemical treatment eradicates them. The numbers from Reunion customs in 2025 illustrate how porous the barrier can be. Agents recorded 157 cases of illegal plant product introduction that year. Roughly 30 percent originated from mainland France, 25 percent from Madagascar, and nearly 20 percent from Mayotte. Customs agents now operate under specific instructions tied to TR4 risk, and flights arriving from Mayotte face enhanced monitoring. On the ground, approximately 50 sentinel parcels are watched under an official surveillance system run by the Daaf and carried out by the departmental federation against harmful organisms. Cirad has developed a rapid detection test that can be used on site, without heavy laboratory equipment. Any positive result still requires confirmation by Anses Reunion before action follows. No outbreak has been confirmed on the island. Whether that holds as exchanges between Indian Ocean islands continue to intensify is the question every banana grower on Reunion is quietly living with.
